What do you want to make sure you do before you die?One of my dreams is to travel to a country like Iceland, where I can see breathtaking landscapes and maybe even the northern lights. I also want to experience the thrill of skydiving at least once in my life. And someday, I hope to have my own farm in the Philippines, a peaceful place surrounded by nature.
-
What are some causes you care about? One cause I really care about is mental health, because many people struggle with it due to stress, trauma, or lack of support, and raising awareness can make a big difference.
-
What do you do with friends in your spare time?I enjoy hosting dinner and karaoke nights at home. Nothing beats good food and singing with friends. I also love going out for lunch or dinner, exploring new restaurants and sharing meals together.
Her message to both host family and au pairs:
I am truly happy to see the journey you are sharing together. This experience is more than just living together, it is a wonderful opportunity to learn, grow, and understand each other in a deeper way. The warmth of Filipino hospitality and the openness of Dutch culture make this exchange truly inspiring. Every day brings new moments to connect, share, and learn. I encourage you to embrace every experience, celebrate the differences, and treasure the lessons you gain along the way. By doing this, you are creating a story not just for yourselves, but one that can inspire others to connect, understand, and grow through cultural exchange. Remember, every shared moment becomes part of something greater a journey that can change lives.

If you could be anywhere other than here, right this minute, where would you be?I always enjoy going for a walk or taking a long train ride to Amsterdam or other big cities to grab a coffee. If I were in the Philippines, I would probably be sitting on the sand, admiring the beauty of the beach.
-
Tell me three pet peevesI dislike being pressured to hurry, as it often leads to mistakes. I prefer to do things accurately.

How do you want people to remember you?Although I may have come across as strict at times, I hope people, especially the lovely au pairs, remember me as someone who genuinely cared. I always aimed to set high standards, not to be tough, but to bring out the best in everyone. I can be fun and sweet as well. More than anything, I want them to know that I was fair, supportive, and always had their back.
Her personal motto: “If you’re scared, do it scared.” It is through moments of discomfort that I grow and reach new levels of success.

Having spent four years as an au pair herself—living in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium—she’s met people from diverse backgrounds and truly understands the unique challenges au pairs face. Thanks to her wealth of experience and genuine connection with the au pair community, Shannen is able to offer practical guidance and help newcomers adjust smoothly to life in the Netherlands.
According to her, helping other Filipinas achieve their dreams brings her so much joy.
Fun Facts about her:
- What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me begins with a worship song, which gives me energy and sets a positive tone for the day. I usually keep breakfast light—just a fruit smoothie or some raw paprika. After that, I check messages from my family, followed by work emails. My day often includes interviewing applicants, which is an important part of my job. In the evening, I take time to relax, read the Bible, or listen to an audio bible version before going to sleep. - What do you think are the best skills that you bring to your job?
I bring empathy, communication, and a good sense of understanding people’s personalities. Having been an au pair myself, I can easily relate to their experiences, which helps me connect with them on a deeper level. I do my best to guide and support them, making sure they feel confident and hopeful about their journey. - What are some causes you care about?
I am passionate about faith and ministry, animal welfare—especially dogs, as I currently have seven in the Philippines—and human rights and equality. I strongly support women’s rights and stand against sexual violence against women.
Her personal motto: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)
